How to Buy Gas (GAS)

Gas is one of the native tokens of the NEO network, a decentralized platform known as the “Chinese Ethereum.” Unlike the Ethereum platform that requires developers to use their own Solidity language, NEO allows users to code their applications with more common languages such as Java.

What makes this different from the NEO coin?

Like Ethereum’s Ether, Gas is the currency that is used by the apps operating on the NEO system. Other key differences with the coin and system include:

  • NEO’s use of the “Delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance” (dbFT) system compared to BTC/ETH’s “Proof of Work” system
  • Gas is generated as each new block is created

NEO’s versatility proves itself to be a strong rival to the Ethereum platform, so let’s put our foot to the pedal and figure out how to buy some Gas.

Create A Coinbase Account

You will first need to purchase some Bitcoin or Ethereum from Coinbase. If you can’t get into Coinbase, try buying the coins from Coinmama — the tutorial will be the same for both. Move ahead to step 2 if you already have some BTC or ETH.

Create A Binance Account

Once you bought your BTC or ETH, you will need to use a cryptocurrency marketplace to purchase all other coins. We will be using Binance for this tutorial, but you can purchase GAS through other marketplaces if you want to. However, we do recommend Binance. Create an account, then continue to step 3.

Transfer BTC or ETH to Binance

No need to worry, we promise this is simpler than it looks. We’re basically going to send our BTC or ETH from our Coinbase wallet to our Binance wallet. Here’s a step-by-step on how to do so:

  • Select “Wallets” on Binance
  • Locate “BTC” or “ETH”
  • Tap “Deposit”
  • Select and copy the address string
  • Open up Coinbase again
  • Select the “Accounts” label on Coinbase
  • Locate your  BTC or ETH wallet & select “Send”
  • Paste the Binance wallet address into the Coinbase recipient address bar
  • Put in the coveted amount and press send!

That went smoothly, didn’t it? If you’re still confused, below are some screenshots describing the process using ETH for reference:

Purchase Gas (GAS) on Binance

Once you’ve moved your BTC or ETH into your Binance wallet, you will be able to purchase all other coins. Drag your mouse over the “Markets” tab and look for the BTC/GAS or ETH/GAS market. Just name your price per coin, select the amount of coins you want to purchase, and then finally buy!

You’re doing a great job! If you’re feeling confused about this step, refer to the screenshot below that outlines the components of the page:

Calculate & Stash Away

Now that you have secured your purchase of Gas coins, you get to decide what to do with them. Many opt to letting them sit in their wallet, and you can too. Now that you have this whole purchasing process in the bag, you can head back to the marketplace to look for other coins as well.
