How to Buy Ethereum Classic (ETC)

Ethereum Classic is a divergence of the Ethereum platform. Essentially, it’s a fork of the Ethereum blockchain, a hard fork to be exact.

After a hacker gained access to one of Ethereum’s chains, known as the  DAO attack, the team behind Ethereum created a new fork in the platform to prevent further intrusions. While there was great debate on whether to implement the hard fork or continue mining on the original blockchain, the hard fork proved to be successful, with 90% of nodes and miners updating and supporting it.

So what makes it different from Ethereum?

ETC is simply a continuation of the Ethereum blockchain. Like Ethereum, ETC:

  • Runs smart contracts
  • Ensures applications aren’t tampered with
  • Protects users privacy and security

Love Ethereum? Cool, let’s get you set up with some ETC.

Open Up A Coinbase Account

Every crypto purchase begins with buying some Bitcoin or Ethereum first. You can get the coins from Coinbase, but for whatever reason, if that’s not working, try Coinmama. The tutorial will be the same for both wallets. Already have some BTC or ETH in your account? Awesome, feel free to skip ahead to step 2.

Create A Binance Account

Now that you have some BTC or ETH in your wallet, you can safely head over to what is known as a cryptocurrency marketplace. Buyers of all sorts use this platform to purchase all other coins (outside of the main currencies). Today, the marketplace we’ll be going through is Binance, but you can buy ETC from other places as well. Create an account with Binance and proceed to step 3.

Send BTC or ETH to Binance

The steps below outline how to move our BTC or ETH from our Coinbase wallet to our Binance wallet. Might seem odd or confusing but it’s rather simple. Follow the below:

  • Tap “Wallets” on Binance
  • Find your “BTC” or “ETH”
  • Press “Deposit”
  • Click and copy the address string
  • Pull up your Coinbase account
  • Tap on the “Accounts” tab on Coinbase
  • Find your BTC or ETH wallet & select “Send”
  • Place the Binance wallet address into the Coinbase recipient address bar
  • Enter the amount you want to transfer and then hit send!

How was that? If you’re still having some issues, take a look at the screenshots below. They describe the process using ETH for reference:

Purchase Ethereum Classic (ETC) on Binance

With BTC or ETH in our Binance wallet, we can now buy some ETC! Search for the “Markets” tab and look for the BTC/ETC or ETH/ETC market. After you have located your preferred market, determine your price per coin, exactly how many you want to take home, and then finally buy!

What else?

Nothing! Check out this screenshot outlining the components of the page, it will help clear up any confusion.

Gauge & Save

Once you have your ETC secured in your wallet, you can make a decision on what to do next. You’re more than welcome to return to the marketplace to purchase other coins, but don’t feel like you need to. Many choose to let their cryptos sit in their wallets, they’ll be safe there.

What more?

Nothing, that’s it! We hope this tutorial helped answer your questions, but if there are any lingering, please send them our way in the chat window to your right. We’re ready to help!
